Ultimate Frisbee Fridays Return to Dixon
Every Friday throughout June and July, Podiatrist Dr. Brandon Gumbiner, and Physical Therapist, Mike Sarno, will be hosting non-competitive, pick-up games of Ultimate Frisbee at the Meadows Soccer Field. For those who are not familiar with Ultimate Frisbee, it is a team game where players pass the frisbee amongst themselves, working it up the field to score a touchdown. The game has similarities to soccer and football but is a non-contact sport.
“I first started playing in High School and then fell in love with the sport in college,” explained Dr. Gumbiner. “As a resident assistant in college, I was in charge of a floor of about 50 residents and found that playing weekly was a great way to build relationships, get exercise, and have fun.”
Everywhere he has lived since college, Dr. Gumbiner has brought his love for the game and created pick-up game leagues as a fun, social way to get to know colleagues and those in the community. Back in the summer of 2012, Dr. Gumbiner and, Mike Sarno, PT, first introduced Ultimate Frisbee to Dixon and it became a big hit across the hospital and community. “We had groups between 10 and 40 people show up to play each week and ages from 7 to 60 years old,” noted Dr. Gumbiner. “I am so excited to get this started again and look forward to bonding with and making new friends in the community, and within the hospital, while promoting positive healthy exercise.”
Anyone in the community is welcome to join, and there is no previous experience needed for these fun, pick-up games. Please arrive at the Meadows Soccer fields as 6:00 pm so teams can be selected, and games will begin at 6:15 pm.
