KSB Receives Baby-Friendly Designation
Baby-Friendly USA, announces that Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital (KSB) has received designation as a Baby-Friendly birth facility.
This prestigious international recognition is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and distinguishes hospitals that provide an exceptional level of care that promotes optimal mother-baby care, bonding, and feeding practices.
Based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, this esteemed award recognizes birth facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies as well as skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth and 24 hour rooming-in, where the baby is kept in the mother’s room so that feeding cues are noticed by the mother.
Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital began the process of earning this designation in June of 2014. They had four years to fully implement the policies and processes to become Baby Friendly using the 4-D Pathway. This tool includes a discovery phase, a development phase, a dissemination phase and finally the designation phase.
The distinction of becoming a Baby-Friendly hospital is a comprehensive, detailed and thorough journey toward excellence in providing evidence-based, maternity care with the goal of achieving optimal infant feeding outcomes and mother/baby bonding. “The Baby-Friendly designation process was not only about changing policies and procedures but shifting attitudes around the importance of breastfeeding as well. We continually focus on what the best thing is for both mom and baby, and breastfeeding has such a positive impact on both” shared Sandy Dennis, Sr. Director of Nursing.
There are more than 20,000 designated Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers worldwide. Currently, there are 504 active Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the United States and Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital is the first facility in the Sauk Valley area to have earned this award.
The “Baby-Friendly” designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey is completed and maintained by continuing to practice the Ten Steps as demonstrated by quality processes.
