KSB Bike Raffle and Bike Club Encourages Kids to Stay Active
The 2019 school year has come to an end, which means summer break for children across the Sauk Valley. In an effort to encourage kids to turn off their tablets and get outside for some physical activity, KSB is once again sponsoring our summer Bike Raffle. Each week at the Dixon City Market, children ages 3 to 18 can stop by the KSB booth to enter their name into the raffle, where a boy and girl winner are drawn.
Last summer, the Bike Raffle program began as a way to help combat physical inactivity and obesity in our area. Data from the 2016 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) shows that these two issues are prevalent within our community, and are the driving factors for many of KSB’s Community Wellness programs.
In its first year, 26 children benefitted from the KSB bike raffle and Housekeeping Director, Jamey Postlewaite was able to see their excitement first-hand when he met the children and their parents at Walmart so they could select a new bicycle and helmet. Thanks to the KSB Foundation, an additional 24 children in our community will receive bikes throughout this summer.
In addition to inspiring physical activity through the bike raffle, the KSB Bike Club is also helping to get kids outdoors. Led by Jamey, this hour-long bike ride is a great way for kids to enjoy time on their bicycles. Any child is welcome to join in on the ride, which meets on the second Thursday of each month in June, July and August at 6:00 pm at the bike path near Washington School.
