“Coats for Kids” drive fills a community need
Coat drive runs Feb. 8 – 22
Our winter weather has gone into overdrive. As the cold temperatures settle in, many of us don’t have to think twice about having proper winter coats for our children. Unfortunately, a good number of our fellow citizens don’t have the means financially to keep their growing kids in warm coats.
Sixteen-year-old Lieth El Bzour, a Dixon High School junior and son of KSB’s Dr. Monther El Bzour, saw the need and spearheaded the “Coats for Kids” drive running Feb. 8-22. The coat drive is accepting coats for our community’s middle school and grade school students. Mr. Magnafici at Reagan Middle School is working with Lieth to distribute coats to kids in need. If the drive brings in more coats than needed in the schools, they will then be distributed to homeless shelters in the area
Lieth is not new to finding ways to help people in need. Two projects he has worked on are Buddy Bags and Meals on Wheels. Seeing the disparity between people of means and those who have much less spurs him on to help others. “Some part of me says, ‘You know what? I’ll do whatever I can to help people in my community have an equal chance,’” said Lieth.
“Coats for Kids” is the first community work project he has started on his own. “I saw kids walking home in the cold without coats on, and it broke my heart. Having this coat drive is a great place to start,” remarked Lieth.
Students like Lieth bring hope and promise for all of our futures, including his proud dad. “That’s what we as parents live for,” said Dr. El Bzour. “We want to see our kids grow to continue our legacies.”
