What is a Calcium Scoring Screening?

Calcium Scoring screening is a non-invasive procedure that uses x-ray images of our coronary arteries to determine if they are blocked or narrowed by the build-up of plaque – an indicator for atherosclerosis or coronary artery disease.

Who Should Have  Calcium Scoring Screening?

Doctors often recommend Calcium Scoring screenings for patients with risk factors such as high blood cholesterol, family history of heart attacks, diabetes, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking or those who are overweight and have no physical activity.

How is the Procedure Performed?

A Calcium Scoring screening uses a large x-ray unit with a  donut shaped opening, called a gantry. A tech will position you on the CT exam table and place electrodes on your chest. The table will move through the machine as images are being taken. The procedure only takes about ten minutes.

What Happens after the Screening?

After your screening, a radiologist will review your images and mail a report to both you and your doctor. Your physician will review any positive test results with you.  If you do not have a primary care physician, KSB can assist you in setting up an appointment.
