KSB Celebrates Lab Week
Many times when patients think of someone in the medical field, they think of doctors and nurses. However, there are many sides of the medical field that are virtually unknown to most people. One area that is behind the scenes is the laboratory, which doctors and clinicians rely upon for test results to diagnosis their patients.
Medical Laboratory Professionals Week originated in 1975 as National Medical Laboratory Week and has been celebrated the last full week of April for the last 42 years. Medical Laboratory Professionals Week provides the profession with a unique opportunity to increase public understanding and appreciation for clinical laboratory personnel.
Here at KSB Hospital, our laboratory provides services for the hospital, outlying clinics and nursing homes in and around Dixon, including Oregon, Ashton, Amboy, Polo, Franklin Grove and Mount Morris.
In celebration of Laboratory Week, our lab shared some fun statistics about their department!
- the average tenure of laboratory staff is 9.6 years
- total tests ordered was 215,685 (approx. 591 per day)
- number of blood products ordered was 1188 units
- number of patient encounters 72,727 (approx. 200 per day)
These numbers are but a small fraction of the tests and setups that are done in the laboratory to obtain valid results on patient samples. Often one ordered test may have several laboratory tests performed to obtain a result for that particular sample. Here at KSB our laboratory team is a dedicated group that works to give the most accurate results so that we can provide the best patient care.
If you know or see a KSB laboratory team member this week April, let them know how much they are appreciated!
