Sam Petty, RN Receives DAISY Award
In 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes established the DAISY Foundation after he died of an autoimmune disease. They soon launched a national recognition program, the DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses, to honor members of the profession who excel in their delivery of skillful and compassionate care. More than 2,000 hospitals in the US participate in this recognition award for nurses, with KSB’s DAISY Award celebrated twice a year.
This year’s fall DAISY reception honored twelve nurses who were nominated for their commitment to our patients and dedication to the field of nursing. Samantha Petty, RN was selected as the fall DAISY Award recipient.
Sam is nurse in the Behavioral Health Department and has worked at KSB since September 2012. She was recognized for her compassionate, caring manner and her dedication for going above and beyond for her patients. Taking the time to really get to know her patients, as well as their needs was something that stood out to her nominator.
“Sam’s compassion and care for our patients is an inspiration to our new nurses as well as those who have been on the unit for many years,” explained Joni Adams, Director of Behavior Health. “Our patients consistently praise Sam for going above and beyond to meet their needs during hospitalization and in discharge planning.”
Sam showed exceptional care to a patient in her unit who was admitted for depression and suicidal thoughts, and was struggling with self-image. Sam sat down with the patient to get to know her and understand her needs. She encouraged the patient to think positively by having her write down something she liked about herself each day, and encouraged her to keep up the hard work. At the end of the patients stay, she expressed that she finally felt good about herself for the first time in a long time and left with a huge smile on her face, all due to Sam’s caring, thoughtful nursing practices.
Congratulations to Sam on this well-deserved award and to all of or DAISY nominees, we thank you for your dedication to excellence in the field of nursing.
